Baldwin Pizzeria (142 Baldwin Road, Parsippany, New Jersey, 973-335-7731, www.baldwinpizza.com) is a find. An ace of an eatery when searching for a good meal served by friendly people. Enter Dhrupa Patel, our server during our Saturday evening post-Mass dinner. She was cordial, patient, and extremely thoughtful. For example, we ordered pizza, and when she brought us our paper plates, she offered to bring us regular silverware if needed, saying that plastic forks and knives don't cut pizza very well on paper plates. True. Past experience confirms this. We started our visit with an order of zucchini sticks ($5.95 ) and then enjoyed a pizza of half broccoli rabe and half plain ($14.50). Both were well prepared. Baldwin Pizzeria, which offers a variety of sandwich, salad, and entree specials, is also a BYOB. A great bottle of white wine would certainly complement the above pie, yes? So, as always, a big thank you to Mike, Dhrupa, and the entire Baldwin Pizzeria team. Located conveniently right off of Route 46 in Baldwin Plaza, with plenty of free parking, it's a convenient way to dine.

During a recent business trip to western New Jersey, I sought a convenient place to stop for lunch prior to my long jaunt home. Frank's Pizza & More (240 Route 206, Flanders, 973-584-0379, www.frankspizzaofflanders.com) was a quick turn right off the highway, and perhaps the thickest pizza slices I've had. 49 years in business, too. That's awesome, longevity being an aspect I admire in the restaurant realm. And "awesome" are the pizza slices below, sausage on the left and chicken bacon ranch on the right ($3.75 for a specialty slice). I must be honest here. I should've taken one of these slices home. The photo above does not truly reveal how thick and filling each slice was, I forced myself to devour both, not a wise thing. But, they were that good.
Frank's Pizza & More has a nice but busy dining area in the front of the eatery, and a more elaborate, laid back dining room in the back of the establishment. The menu is a full one, and the taste and quality of the above slices encourages another long drive and return. Steve Thank you, Lignos family, and thank you to Sue, our server for great hospitality during an early, Tuesday afternoon visit to Manny's Preakness Diner (Preakness Shopping Center, Hamburg Turnpike, Wayne, New Jersey, 973-694-9260). The afternoon of our stop for a late breakfast, Manny's Preakness Diner customers included a police officer, high school students, shopping center shoppers, and I'm going to assume locals who frequent the almost 30-yea-old eatery. They obviously know what my wife and I learned: comfort and good food is nearby. I ordered a grilled cheese and Taylor ham sandwich on rye ($5.95). Delicious, hearty and substantial...need I say more? This was an excellent sandwich. Lucille selected a favorite of hers, a bacon omelette with a side of home fries and wheat toast ($7.55). Equally good tasting, this meal went a long way, and is highly recommended if you're in the mood for a great breakfast entrée. The great thing about Manny's Preakness Diner happens prior to your entering the eatery: free parking. Many spaces are to be had just a short walking from the front door, and once inside comfortable seating, great service, and very good food await.
Dependable is the appropriate word here. You don't stay in business in the hospitality realm without providing quality, even amidst changing times. Manny's Preakness Diner is a proven victor. Steve First a popular destination in Fair Lawn, now the same in Elmwood Park. I recall many times as a writer for Fair Lawn Patch driving by Tiramisu Italian Restaurant, mentally vowing to plan a possible business profile article, but never doing so. So, when an opportunity arrived for Lucille and I to attend an event at their new location (205 Market Street, Elmwood Park, New Jersey, 201-791-0025), I sought to revisit the past and finally try the cuisine. Located just a few minutes off of the Garden State Parkway and Route 46, Tiramisu has lovely dining room and equally lovely party room. We both began our feast with a nice lunch salad, oil and vinegar the dressing. Simple stuff, but good. For our entrees choices on the overcast day, I selected the chicken marsala with marsala wine mushroom sauce ($9.95), Lucille the vitello (veal) parmigiana with a side of pasta ($10.95). Both meals were affordable and satisfying, a good portion size for lunch. I was able to return to my writing desk minus a bloat feeling from overeating, my writing apparatus airborne instead of grounded.
